Midland Junction Arts Centre provides a suite of creative workshops throughout the year covering ceramics, printmaking, textiles, painting and much more. Participation continues to grow as creative skills are shared by professional artists with community members. SUSAN ECKER

Seeking iconographic descriptions of the Western Australian landscape, Susan Ecker concentrates on enduring elements - the land, rock formations and the river. Blurring the distinction between drawing and painting, Ecker’s luminous mixed media canvases capture changing light and the passing of time to evoke abstract memories of place.

Botanic Philharmonia exhibits Claire Gillam’s Plant Band (2017) and Maestro (2019) together for the first time. This fantastical musical collaboration of native flora, specifically designed robotic instruments and processing synthesizers explores the universe of plant based creative performance and generative music making.

Celebrating the act of sharing food, Tableware presents a selection of handcrafted ceramics and textiles made for the dinner table complimented by a feast of native flora. Styled as a pop up shop; a banquet of platters, plates, bowls, beakers and napery showcase the work of makers from around the country.

Celebrating the fertile landscape of the Swan Valley, Lush Valley invites visitors to discover the floral bounty of the eastern region through a selection of works from the City of Swan’s Art Collection. These works, by renowned artists including Gladys Kemarre, Jude Taylor, Rosemary Collard & Chen Hongguang will be exhibited alongside the work of primary school children from the City of Swan who have participated in the 2019 Swan Environmental Art Project.

There are more than 12,000 different types of wildflowers listed in the flora catalogue for Western Australia, over 60% of which are found nowhere else in the world. Wildflower State presents a selection of over 30 invited Western Australian artists who have created works on paper in praise of the state’s unique flora.

The region’s youth showcase their talent, presenting a diverse range of two and three-dimensional works via film, traditional and experimental media for this annual show.

ARTIST IN FOCUS

DEBORAH RALPH-KAFARELA

Deborah Ralph-Kafarela is working with the local Midland community during her time as Artist in Focus to develop a series of artworks and installations that challenge cultural values of rough sleeping and homelessness. Multa Plenty aims to address issues of equality and displacement, by recognizing abundance and emphasising that there is more than enough to go around.

ANNE WILLIAMS

Hand stitching can bring a gentle respite in a world where the increasing acceleration of daily life often threatens to overwhelm. Williams is conducting an investigation into how we experience the quality of time through hand stitching - working with daily, weekly and yearly rhythms.

For the past decade, the annual In Focus exhibition at MJAC has featured artists from DADAA workshops connected to its Midland hub. This is an inclusive exhibition where the artists select one of their best works to present.

Ian Williams and Ellen Norrish explore virtual landscapes and the complexities of being present in a technological environment for The Life Around. The exhibition showcases the distinct paintings styles of the two emerging artists as they establish a reflective space in-between two realities.

Danjoo - Interwoven celebrates local Aboriginal culture, Country, language and visual arts practice in Western Australia, proudly presenting new and recent artworks by eighteen Aboriginal artists from or now residing in the south west corner of the state. Danjoo – meaning together in Bibbulmun Noongar language reflects the bringing together of established, mid-career and emerging Aboriginal artists working in diverse art forms, presenting artworks that speak of local Aboriginal culture and contemporary, personal, social and political issues.

In conjunction with Danjoo - Interwoven, artworks made by Moorditj Noongar Community College children and participants of recent weaving workshops with Bibbulmun artist Lea Taylor will be showcased. Visitors are invited to enjoy a soundscape of Bibbulmun words while taking part in the interactive weaving space.
