WORN OUT WORN ART

Celebrating its 15th year, Mundaring Arts Centre Inc’s Worn Out Worn Art 2019 showcased a stunning array of imaginative costumes created by primary and secondary school students from across the eastern region, as well as the artistic talents of professional visual and performing artists.

In a festive celebration of creative thinking and environmental consciousness, the Lotterywest supported project commenced with a series of workshops to transform waste into beautiful and innovative wearable works of art. Leading West Australian textile artists and designers reused recycled materials and upcycled clothing to reconnect participants with ‘lost’ construction skills. Choreographers held sessions at participating schools and at the Midland Junction Arts Centre to prepare the participants for the Worn Out Worn Art live performance.

On Saturday 9 November, the historic Midland Junction Arts Centre came alive with creativity and colour as the Worn Out Worn Art Wearable Art performance filled the auditorium to capacity. Fifty imaginative costumes created by adults and young people from the eastern region (including students from Malvern Springs Primary, Kalamunda Senior High School, Challis Primary, Kiara College, Dulwan Minindi Indigenous Youth Rangers La Salle College and Governor Stirling Senior High School) were woven together by Artistic Director Sarah Zel Chescoe to create a performance focusing on the destructive and regenerative forces of nature. Outstanding vocal artists, Paris Cusack (Youth Ambassador WA Opera) and Persia Najafzadeh shared their exceptional skills with the crowd, delivering two live performances to complement the choreography.

The free performance was made possible with the support of Lotterywest, City of Swan, Shire of Mundaring, Jacksons Drawing Supplies, Vicinity Centres, Midland Junction Arts Centre and Mundaring Arts Centre Inc.

An exhibition of costumes from the Worn Out Worn Art Performance were displayed for the public to enjoy “close up” at the Midland Junction Arts Centre up until the 22 December 2019.
